The New Bohemian Revolution

"Well-behaved women rarely make history" ~ Laurel Thatcher Ulrich

It seems a great deal of a young girls life is spent learning what good girls do and don’t do. Good girls don’t make a fuss. Good girls don’t draw attentions to themselves. Good girls never kiss and tell. Good girls certainly don’t endeavor to change the world.

Before she became famous, Maya Angelou certainly did not conform to the "Good Girls Book of  Rules." Among her many jobs prior to fame, she once worked as a prostitute. She played a very active role in the civil rights movement, and her words have gone on to inspire millions of women around the world. She may not be a good girl, but good girls rarely change the world.

Another less that good girl is found in Susan Sontag. Though she prided herself on being a novelist, it was her essays that sparked the imagination of women everywhere. She was incredibly intelligent, and dedicated to being honest despite the negative publicity she received on a regular basis.

Most girls who dream of becoming actresses do so dreaming of fame and fortune. Uta Hagen broke that mold. She was so dedicated to the craft of acting that she preferred to share her knowledge of the craft with others. Blacklisted during the McCarthy era for very outspoken views on human rights and politics. Those who knew her had no doubt she could have become known as one of the greatest actresses of all time, but most of her career was spent behind the scenes.

Many little boys and girls dream of changing the world when they are young, but so few follow that dream into adulthood. It somehow becomes lost when we face the expectations of the adult world. Some dreamed of being writers, others artists, and still others actors upon the stage.

Most of us gave up when the cold hard reality of life hit us. Starving for our art isn’t all that glamorous. Changing the world is a lot of work, and most of the time the pay is lousy. Being a part of the Bohemian revolution isn’t all that glamorous after all.

Some though, they hold on to that dream, and they keep making whatever sacrifices they need to make to make it a reality. They leave their mark on the world, they each make history in their own ways.

The dreamers, the thinkers, the doers. They don’t just talk about the problems, they find the solutions. They serve as inspirations to those of us who are still in the dreaming phase. Maya Angelou, susan Sontag, and Uta Hagen and many others like them stood up for what they believed in despite the consequences, and so can we.

We can make a difference, but first we must dream...
